I came across Crystalborne Sigils and the whole idea of magic being forbidden in the Empire grabbed me. The opening with the strange ship sailing into the harbor feels like the start of something big and dangerous. Did you picture the ship first, or Gyasi’s secret magic, when you started writing?

I had the idea of a ship as a main part of a fantasy story long before I wrote the story that became Crystalborne Sigils. Gyasi’s part of the story came as I pulled everything together and worked on the first drafts of all the books in the series.
